Karate Kid: Interview with Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan stars as Mr. Han in "The Karate Kid," the remake of the 1984 classic, also starring Jaden Smith. The film was released on June 11 by Sony Pictures.  

Chan felt a particular affinity for the story, as he admits he can actually relate to the young American character.  “I understand the fish out of water story,” he says.  “About 30 years ago, I went to America for the first time by myself. When you’re in a completely different culture, it’s very frightening.”

Working with Jay and Mark Duplass has always been a unique experience for both cast and crew members, and the brothers saw no reason to change their idiosyncratic approach for their first Hollywood film. Their unconventional methods ranged from shooting the script in chronological order to allowing the actors to develop their own dialogue and blocking. Even the most experienced hands were surprised and energized by it.

One of the most talked-about movies at the 2010 Sundance Film Fest, and the winner of the Teddy Award for Best Feature at the 2010 Berlin Film Fest, "The Kids Are All Right" is directed by Lisa Cholodenko from an original screenplay that she wrote with Stuart Blumberg.  The film serves as opening night of the Los Angeles Film Fest next week and will be released by Focus Features July 9.
