Brando protested against the treatment of Indians, on and off-screen, sending an Apache activist to accept His Oscar Award (for The Godfather”) in his name and deliver a decidedly political message. John Wayne said, “It was sad that Brando did what he did. If he had something to say, he should have appeared that night and stated his views, instead of taking some little unknown girl and dressing her up in an Indian outfit.”
