In Nyad, a inspirational based-on-a-true-story sports drama, vet actress and multiple Oscar nominee Annette Bening shines as Diana Nyad.

Three decades after giving up professional swimming, she decides to do the impossible – swim from Cuba to Florida, a 110-mile journey that will test her mentally, physically and spiritually.

At the age of 60, without a shark cage, it might be impossible, but Bening, who’s more or less the same age, makes it utterly credible.

Two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster also excels as Bonnie Stoll, Nyad’s former lover, and lifelong BFF and current coach.

Directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, the Oscar-winning filmmakers behind “Free Solo,” and photographed by Claudio Miranda (“Top Gun: Maverick”), Nyad is a rousing story of perseverance and tenacity that gets the attention of Oscar voters.

In ideology, the film is very American–a testament to the unflagging power of the human spirit and the fact that if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.

It’s full of rousing, Oscar-caliber performances and action sequences that will have you holding your breath. The scene of the box jellyfish, among many other thrills, is riveting.

The movie suggests that swimming is an excellent practice for a hobby, or regular activity, if not a professional career.

(It’s the only sports hat I like and am good at, relatively speaking).
