Hedda Hooper, upset by Signoret’s win, due to the latter’s known leftist politics said: “I never minded when Democrats won, but I drew the lines when Simone Signoret hit the jackpot. I am broadminded as anyone, but that was ridiculous. Let her decorate her mantle with Picasso doves and the likes. I got so mad, I upped and resigned from the Academy.”
