Movie Stars: Functions–Essence Beyond the Narrative

Movie Stars: Essence Beyond the Narrative

Stars enhancing and distracting

Miriam Hansen, Babel and Babylon, 1991, p. 246 (In Klinger, Sirk, p. 118)

“By activating a discourse external to the diegesis, the star’s presence enhances a centrifugal tendency in the viewers’ relation to the film’s text (Narrative).

The star’s persona and performance weaken the diegetic spell in favor of a string of spectacular moments/images that display the essence of the star.”

The star’s body, background, personality are all extra-filmic factors that inspire or encourage a rapture with the images that take the viewers beyond the narrative, encouraging a spectacle-driven sensibility that derives pleasure in a sporadic, alinear, anarrative manner.
