The auteurist critic aims to place a particular film within the context of earlier (and later) films.
Prime example: Hitchcock
H’s films can be divided into triad, with each triad linked by some theme, or character, or motif, or common principle.
If we are to take directors and films seriously, we have to follow them serially.
It’s one thing to analyze a single film; it’s another to analyze it vis-a-cis his/her overall career.
