Fresh off a Best Director Oscar nomination for Blue Velvet (in my view, his masterpiece), and the premiere of the game-changing Twin Peaks, David Lynch shocked Cannes audiences with his violent, hyper-sexual, and totally strange Wild at Heart.
Starring Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern as young lovers on the lam, the film was so divisive with Cannes audiences that boos erupted when then-jury president Bernardo Bertolucci announced it received the Palme d’Or.
Some critics consider Wild at Heart to be one of Lynch’s weakest feature, and one of Cannes Fest’ worst winners.
But on a second viewing (if you care to pay attention), the movie offer sone rewards, and certainly is a panel in the small output of Lynch as an auteur.
