Acclaimed filmmaker Hubert Sauper’s latest Cuban docu, Epicentro, won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for documentary at the 2020 Sundance Film Fest.

Sauper’s previous works, Darwin’s NightmareWe Come as Friends, were serious features on capitalism and post-colonialism.

The poor Cuban subjects in this docu come across as resourceful survivors, still proud to be living in one of the last communist countries in the world.

The narrative centers on two prepubescent girls, Leonelis Arango Salas and Annielys Pelladito Zaldivar, who explain that they’re making a film together about “foreign interference and slavery and about people in the street.”
