The new remake of "The Stepfather" (opening today, see review) is a dreadful slasher flick, which, by comparison, makes the 1987 original a classic of the first rank. Joseph Ruben's horror feature, an exploration of the dark underbelly of that most scared of American institutions, the nuclear family, was always a terrific film; the sequels that it spawned are not so good.
It's worth revisiting the 1987 movie for it tells us how much Hollywood's genre moviemaking has changed over the past two decades….
