Ready or Not: Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett’s Darkly Comedic Thriller

Fox Searchlight’s Ready or Not, a darkly comedic thriller about a diabolical game of hide-and-seek, debuts in 2,244 American theaters.

The low-budget film is expected to earn upwards of $6.5 million over the weekend and $8 to $12 million during its first five days of release.

Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, “Ready or Not” is a deranged black comedy, which offers audacious viewers some sadistic, and even subversive pleasures.

As co-written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy, Ready or Not takes a more fantasy-oriented and black comedy approach to hunting humans for sport

Samara Weaving plays Grace, a young bride who joins her new husband Alex Le Domas (Mark O’Brien) and his rich, eccentric family in a game of hide-and-seek, where her in-laws attempt to find her before dawn.

When Grace realizes that the Le Domas family intends to hunt and kill her, she turns the one-sided hunt into a free-for-all, resulting in a “game” in which everyone fights for survival.

Contrasting marital versus familial loyalty, the R-rated thriller poses the question of would Alex turn against his own clan to help Grace? And if so, at what price and consequences.

Grace’s nocturnal journey unfolds as a series of unexpected diabolical rituals.

Smartly constructed, the narrative shows us the younger selves of the main protagonists: Grace, Alex, Daniel, and Becky.
