Irishman, The: Scorsese’s Mob Epic Starring De Niro and Pacino Will Not Get Wide Theatrical Release

Netflix will forgo a wide theatrical release for Scorsese’s The Irishman in order to make the film available to its subscribers as quickly as possible.

There had been hopes that Netflix might soften its stance about honoring theatrical windows, but in the end, it couldn’t reach compromise with chains like AMC and Cineplex.

The Irishman will open November 1 in select indie cinemas.  Three weeks later (26 days) it will debut November 27 on Netflix, much as Alfonso Cuarón’s Oscar-winning Roma did last year.

This rules out the sort of big-screen release that Scorsese and other directors are used to, unless something changes.

The Irishman world premieres as opening night of the 2019 New York Film Fest on September 27.
