Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga–World Premiere at 2024 Cannes Film Fest, May 14

The Cannes film festival confirmed that George Miller’s Mad Max movie starring Anya Taylor-Joy will have its world premiere May 14.

Nine years after George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road served as Cannes opener in 2015, the director’s follow-up:  will also have its world premiere, out of competition, in Cannes.

Anya Taylor-Joy stars as the titular Furiosa, the character played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road.

The prequel follows the young Furiosa after she is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus, who goes to war with Fury Road tyrant Immortan Joe. While the two battle for dominance, Furiosa must survive and piece together the means to find her way home.

Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke co-star.

The Cannes premiere of Fury Road, coming 30 years after Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, reignited Miller’s post-apocalyptic franchise. The film went on to gross more than $380 million worldwide.

Warner Bros. is releasing Furiosa in France on May 22.

The U.S. release date is set for May 24.

Barbie helmer Greta Gerwig will be the jury president for the 2024 Cannes festival, heading the group that picks this year’s Palme d’Or.

Canadian director Xavier Dolan (MommyIt’s Only The End of the World) a Cannes regular, will head up the Un Certain Regard jury.

Cannes will unveil its full 2024 line-up at a press conference in Paris next month.

The 77th Cannes Film Fest runs May 14-25, 2024.
