Óliver Laxe Coro (Galician: born April 11, 1982) French-born Spanish director, screenwriter and actor of Galician ancestry.
Laxe was born in Paris to Galician emigrants. His parents met at Bataclan at dance party for emigrants.
Laxe’s maternal family comes from Vilela, Navia de Suarna, Lugo.
He has a brother, Felipe, who works as film producer and often collaborates on his films.
In 1988, at the age of 6, he returned with his family to Galicia.
After completing his secondary education in A Coruña, he moved to Barcelona where he studied filmmaking at the Pompeu Fabra University, before relocating to London where he filmed his first short Y las chimeneas decidieron escapar.
His debut feature, You All Are Captains, premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2010 Cannes Film Fest, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize.
His second feature, Mimosas, was filmed in the Atlas Mountains and screened in the Critics’ Week section at the 2016 Cannes Film Fest, where it won the Nespresso Grand Prize.
The project was developed at the TorinoFilmLab Interchange program in 2011.
Returning to his native Galicia, he directed Fire Will Come, which premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Fest and won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize.
His fourth feature, Sirāt, premiered in Competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Fest and won the Jury Prize.
Laxe was previously in relationship with costume designer and frequent collaborator Nadia Acimi. He has been living in Navia de Suarna, Lugo since 2020.
The family house, named Casa Quindós after maternal grandmother, functions as headquarters of the Ser Asociation, which promotes cultural and environmentalist activities in rural Galicia.
