Calude Chabrol–Auteur
Each of his films has more meaning when seen in the context with the film that preceded it and the one that followed it than when it stands alone (essence of auteurism as analysis of total career)
Controlled formalism: stunning craftsmanship
Each film contains at least 3 or4 thrilling sequences
Parts of his films are often more impressive than the whole
Increasingly more restrained but also more masterful mise-en-scene.
Chabrol was the least famous of the other New Wave founders due to his focus on the noir thriller genres (which were less reputable than dramas or comedies).
But there’s no denying that he was the most efficient and technically fluent than his counterparts, which may account for his huge body of work.
