Cannes Film Fest 2025: “Sorry, Baby”–Sundance Hit is Closing Night of Directors Fortnight

Sorry, Baby, one of the buzziest titles from this year’s Sundance Film Fest, is one of the few to sell in a major deal.

Marking the feature debut of writer-director Eva Victor, who also stars, the film’s logline is: Something bad happened to Agnes. But life goes on … for everyone around her, at least.

Agnes is a college professor still coping with an incident of sexual assault that took place three years ago on her current campus, when she was a grad student. Highlights of the trailer include the character reconnecting with close friend Lydie (Naomi Ackie) and sparking up a romance with Gavin, a character played by Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea).

Assured and heartfelt, Sorry, Baby sold to A24 for $8 million after its Sundance debut and is set to close out the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight section in late May.

Also starring John Carroll Lynch, Louis Cancelmi, and Kelly McCormack, the film is produced by Adele Romanski, Mark Ceryak, and Oscar winner Barry Jenkins.

It’ll be released in select theaters on June 27.

Coming off of the release of Warfare, from Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland, as well as the adventure The Legend of Ochi, A24’s 2025 slate also includes the dark comedy Friendship (May 9), starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd; Bring Her Back (May 30) from Talk to Me helmers Danny and Michael Philippou; Materialists (June 13) from Past Lives director Celine Song; Ari Aster’s Cannes-bound Eddington (July 18); Benny Safdie’s MMA drama The Smashing Machine starring Dwayne Johnson; and Timothée Chalamet starrer Marty Supreme (December 25) from Safdie’s brother, Josh.
