Guillermo del Toro’s vampire horror series The Strain will soon have a new streaming home, Shudder, in June 2025.
All four seasons of The Strain will stream on Shudder on June 22.
The series was created by del Toro and Chuck Hogan, based on their novel trilogy of the same name.
The underrated vampire series aired on FX from 2014 to 2017, telling the story of a mysterious viral outbreak that causes a strain of vampires to take over New York City. The Strain stars Corey Stoll as Dr. Ephraim “Eph” Goodweather, the head of the CDC’s Canary Team in New York City. David Bradley, Mia Maestro and Kevin Durand also star.
The Strain’s story begins when Dr. Goodweather is called to investigate an airplane landing where everyone on board was found dead. When Goodweather’s team discover signs and symptoms related to an ancient strain of vampirism, they’re too late to stop the virus as it begins to spread. As the strain takes over the city, Goodweather and his team work together with some of the city’s residents to try and save humanity from succumbing to the deadly virus. Later seasons see Goodweather discovering an even darker underworld rife with corruption.
The Strain was well-received by viewers–average rating on Rotten Tomatoes of 79%.
Critics praised the series for effectively mixing its supernatural elements alongside gruesome gore, and the first two seasons were rated highly. Season 3 received a mixed reception, but the series ended to generally positive reviews and a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for Season 4.
Frankenstein Movie
While The Strain saw humanity struggling against the vampires of legend, del Toro’s next major release will tell the story of another icon of horror stories: Frankenstein. Based on Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, del Torro’s sci-fi horror movie will star Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein’s monster and Mia Goth as Victor’s fiancée Elizabeth.
Goth recently teased the epic scale of del Torro’s Frankenstein adaptation. “I’ve never been a part of something so big and so grand, but it’s also incredibly emotional and deeply personal. It’s a story that’s been a part of Guillermo’s life since he was a boy, and so I definitely think people might be pleasantly surprised by how much heart there is in this movie.”
