In 1991, Van Sant introduced Kier to American audiences with his drama My Own Private Idaho, loosely based on Shakespeare’s “Henry IV.”

With her independent production company, she co-wrote and co-produced several social-message films and became the first woman to direct a film noir, The Hitch-Hiker, in 1953.

The conviction disclosure had no negative effect on Calhoun’s career; it served to solidify his “bad boy” image.

He also directed John Wayne’s final film, the Western The Shootist (1976).
