June 25, 2009–The governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences approved the rules for the 82nd Academy Awards at their June meeting last week. The most significant change was made in the Music–Original Song category.

June 24, 2009–There will be 10 Best Picture nominees starting with the 82nd Oscar ceremony, scheduled for March 7, 2009 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
Oscar Actors: Basinger, Kim–L.A. Confidential (As Prostitute)
Kim Basinger received the Best Supporting Actress Award in 1997 for her role in Curtis Hanson’s critically acclaimed film L.A. Confidential, based on the James Ellroy classic crime novel of the same title.
Oscar Movies: Pinky (1949)
“Pinky,” Kazan's interracial melodram was nominated for 3 Oscars: Best Actress for Jeanne Crain
Supporting Actress for Ethel Waters, and Supporting Actress for Ethel Barrymore

Oscar Context:
In 1949, the winner of the Best Actress Oscar was Olivia De Havilland for William Wyler's literary adaptation “The Heiress; it was De Havilland's second Oscar after winning for “To Each His Own” in 1946.
Water and Barrymore probably cancelled each other out, and the Supporting Actress winner was Merceded McCambridge for “All the King's Men,” which swept the Best Picture and other Oscars.

In 1959, the fourth year of the foreign-language Oscar category, the five nominees were: “Black Orpheus” from France, which won, “The Bridge” from the Federal Republic of Germany, “The Great War” from Italy, “Paw” from Denmark, and “The Village on the River” from the Netherlands.
