Art & Copy: Interview with Doug Pray

I've made a positive film about ads. I'd once believed that our systems of commerce might go away, and with them, all unwanted commercial messaging, but they haven't yet, and won't soon. Advertising, in fact, may actually be an innately human act itself. But like all creative endeavors (books, paintings, movies, architecture) most of it is mediocre. Ultimately, I hope “Art & Copy” inspires artists and writers to strive to make more meaningful, more entertaining, or more socially uplifting ads. With so much advertising surrounding us these days, it would be great to get that 2% figure a bit higher–Doug Pray.

Woman in Berlin, A: Interview with Star Nina Hoss

Nina Hoss plays Anonyma in “A Woman in Berlin,” which was released by Strand Releasing on July 17, 2009.

This woman had traveled all over the world, she had lived in Moscow, France, and England, she had studied art, history, and foreign languages, she was a photographer and a journalist, in other words, she was a very intelligent person. I was interested in the question of her relationship to the regime.”

Cold Souls: Interview with Director Sophie Barthes

Sophie Barthes is the writer-director of “Cold Souls,” starring Paul Giamatti, which is released August 7, 2009 by Samuel Goldwyn.

I like to write for a specific actor in mind, good actors are an infinite source of inspiration. I was lucky enough to win a screenplay competition at the Nantucket Film Festival in 2006 and, by coincidence, to meet Paul Giamatti in person, who was also attending the event to present an award to Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor.

District 9: Interview with Director Neill Blomkamp

Blomkamp hit the streets with a camera crew, looking to capture reactions from real people.  Blomkamp soon discovered that his idea of intergalactic refugees suddenly arriving on the city’s doorstep dovetailed with the real conflict and xenophobia prevalent amongst the citizens of Johannesburg towards the influx of illegal aliens from neighboring countries.  The honest reactions he captured on camera brought a vitality to the short film, blurring the line between fiction and reality.

Time Travelers Wife, The: Interview with Actress Rachel McAdams

I think a love that can withstand the biggest obstacles is inspiring and the obstacle Clare and Henry face is certainly very challenging.”
