Croatian writer-director Arsen Anton Ostojic made an interesting debut with his episodic drama, A Wonderful Night in Split, which provides a window into a world that’s been unknown and unrepresented to most viewers.
The movie world premiered at the 2004 Sarajevo Film Fest, where it won the top award, before making the global festival route.
The drug trade in the economically-depressed Croatian region offers the center of a sprawling drama. In each of the three stories set in the coastal town of Split, the lives of all the residents–children and adults–are influenced by drugs; they are either dealing, using, or trying to avoid drugs.
The rapper Coolio appears as a sailor trading smack for the services of a prostitute, who is also addicted.
