The film is based on a 2005 short film—What We Do In The Shadows: Interviews With Some Vampires—written and directed by Waititi and Clement, and starring Jonny Brugh, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer and Stu Rutherford in their roles of Deacon, Nick and Stu respectively.

Viago (Taika Waititi), Vlad (Jemaine Clement), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh) and Petyr (Ben Fransham) turned during different time periods, which leads to some brilliant spins on familiar issues like doing the dishes, getting into nightclubs, adapting to new technology and so much more.

The feature film adaptation was shot in Wellington in 2012, and was Waititi’s first feature since Boy.

The winning jokes and the charming friendships between the characters led to a whole series dedicated to their antics was welcome.

What We Do in the Shadows premiered at the Sundance Film Fest in January 2014.

It was released theatrically August 18, 2014 by Madman Entertainment to critical acclaim.

The film was popular at the box office, earning $6.9 million on a $1.6 million budget.
