The Uprising misfired with $3.25 million from 2,068 theaters in its debut.
Paul Greengrass (“Bourne” franchise, “United 93”) directed the movie, which stars Andrew Garfield as a rebellion leader who inspired the legend of “Robin Hood.”
The Uprising earned a “B-” grade on CinemaScore, which doesn’t bode well for box office longevity.
Focus Features, which is distributing the movie, acquired American rights for $12 million.
Garfield goes medieval in Greengrass’ historical drama about the English Peasants’ Revolt of 1381.
After a pandemic (the Black Death) has ravaged the land, barons are consolidating power and riches, by bleeding ordinary people dry.
Against this alien background, a simple farmer named Wat Tyler (Garfield) finally snaps and sparks a rebellion that threatens to engulf the reign of young king Richard II’s (Woody Norman).
Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, and Johnny Lee Miller also star.
