Tea and Sympathy (1956), directed by Vincente Minnelli (himself latent gay man), follows a “sensitive” prep school teen who’s bullied by the other students and teachers. They perceive him as a “sissi” and nickname him “Sister Boy.”
My biography of Minnelli
In the end, he finds solace in an older woman, played by Deborah Kerr, who sets out to prove that he’s “normal” by sleeping with him!
However, viewers back then–and especially later on–knew that he was a gay boy, fearful of the stigma attached to his real sexual identity.
