Sentimental and predictable, Sweet November is a romantic comedy, written by Herman Raucher and starring Sandy Dennis, Anthony Newley and Theodore Bikel.
Grade: C+
The film had been written as a stage play by Raucher, but before it was performed, Universal paid Raucher $100,000 to adapt it as a screenplay.
Sandy Denis, fresh off her Oscar winning role in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf? plays Sara Deever, who meets a successful British box manufacturer Charlie Blake (Anthony Newley) when they both take driver’s exam in New York City. She tries to get a few answers from him, but he gets expelled for cheating.
They run into each other later and go out on a date, which turns into love, hampered by obstacles.
It is poorly directed by Robert Ellis Miller–very much like a static play–who in the same year also made The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, arguably his best feature in a long and undistinguished career
