Sociology of Theater and Drama: Ideas

Theater as an Agent of Social Change and Integration

The theater as an agent of integration during political crises and revolutions, such as the French of 1789 and the Russian of 1917.

Unlike religion, which reflects more or less steady and stable social values, the theater represents–and is expected to be–a much more flexible institution, one capable of reflecting the changes of the times.

This may be the reason why in some eras, the theater reflects societal norms compatible with those of religion, while in others, it stands for opposite ones.

Theater Architecture

Studying architecture and design of theaters as arts forms tasked with social functions and needs to reflect new and different perceptions of the role of audiences as well as new social values.
