Universal’s “Purge” sequel leads the new wide releases, which include Columbia Pictures’ “Sex Tape” and Disney’s “Planes: Fire & Rescue.”
“Sex Tape” came in fourth with $5.7 million on Friday. The summer’s latest wannabe raunchy comedy is headed for a lower-than-expected $16 million debut.
The film, which cost over $40 million to produce, reunites Cameron Diaz with her “Bad Teacher” co-star Jason Segel and director Jake Kasdan.
But the trio failed to recreate the box office magic of their first collaboration, which opened to $31.6 million in 2011.
“Sex Tape” is star Cameron Diaz’s second comedy this year. Diaz’s “The Other Woman” opened to no. 1 with $24 in late April in a much less competitive market.
