Unfaithful (2002)

Adrian Lyne’s most erotic thriller is not Fatal Attraction, or 9½ Weeks, but Unfaithful, an elegant thriller about infidelity, guilt and rage.
Grade: B
Diane Lane, who plays a woman who strays outside her marriage to Richard Gere, elevates this familiar genre piece above its standard trappings.
Few critics mentioned that the screenplay by Alvin Sargent and William Broyles Jr. was actually based on The Unfaithful Wife by French New Wave director Claude Chabrol.
Lane’ sex scenes with Olivier Martinez are hot, leaving little doubt about what “was missing” in her more regular sex with her husband.
Theatrically released in the US on May 10, 2002, the film was a box office success, grossing $119.1 million against its $50 million production budget.

Despite mixed reviews from critics for the picture itself, Lane received critical acclaim for her performance. In a highly competitive year in the Best Actress category, Lane scored an award from the N.Y. Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) and an Oscar nomination (her first and only) for Best Actress.
