Say One for Me, directed by Frank Tashlin in 1959, is a pale imitation of Going My Way, Bing Crosby’s 1944 Oscar-winner that inspired it.
Crosby plays a Broadway priest who gets mixed up with a chorus girl, played by the perpetually perky Debbie Reynolds at the height of her box-office popularity.
Though there are songs (all mediocre), it’s hard to classify this film as a musical; it’s a contrived hybrid of romance, music, and adventure but not satisfying on any level.
Eeven a gifted director like Tashlin can’t salvage or elevate such material.
