Pedro Pascal and and Elizabeth Debicki Surprise With Wins Over ‘Succession’ Stars as ‘Barbie’ Is Shut Out
Multiple nominees ‘American Fiction,’ up for three awards, and double nominees ‘Nyad,’ ‘Poor Things’ and ‘Maestro’ were winless at the 2024 actors awards ceremony.
It was in the TV categories where the biggest surprises occurred.
After winning multiple trophies at the Critics Choice Awards and Emmys last month for its third and final season, Succession, which led the SAG Awards TV nods with five, seemed like the likely big winner heading into Saturday’s show.
But instead the HBO drama only took home one award, albeit for the top prize of best drama ensemble. But after Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook won best actor and actress in a drama series at the Critics Choice Awards and Emmys, within the span of days in January, it was surprising that both lost in their respective SAG Awards categories.
Instead The Last of Us‘ Pedro Pascal won best drama actor, a category in which Succession accounted for 3 of 5 nominees, and The Crown‘s Elizabeth Debicki won best drama actress.
Other snubs in the TV categories include Quinta Brunson surprisingly not following up her Abbott Elementary Emmy win with a SAG Award trophy, particularly since Abbott won best comedy series ensemble at the SAG Awards last year.
Onetime awards show favorite Ted Lasso, which won 3 SAG Awards over its first two seasons, did not win at the 2024 SAG Awards for its third season despite going into Saturday night’s ceremony with 4 nominations.
On the film side, the supporting actor and actress awards played out largely as the Golden Globes, Critics Choice and BAFTA Awards did, with Robert Downey Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph winning.
And in the the close races of best actress and actor, it’s noteworthy that Lily Gladstone and Cillian Murphy beat out fellow frontrunners Emma Stone and Paul Giamatti, who won best actress and actor, respectively, in a musical or comedy movie at the Golden Globes. Murphy and Stone won at the BAFTAs, where Gladstone wasn’t nominated, and Giamatti and Stone won at the Critics Choice Awards.
Oppenheimer, which went into the SAG Awards up for four prizes, only lost in one category (supporting actress).
However, Barbie didn’t win for any of the four awards for which it was nominated, despite going into the SAG Awards with as many nominations as Oppenheimer (though one of Barbie’s four nods was in the stunt categories).
American Fiction‘s three SAG Awards nominations generated attention when nods were announced, but the film failed to win any of the awards for which it was nominated.
Double nominees Poor Things, Nyad and Maestro also were shut out.
