Rocky Balboa: New Chapter is Crowd-Pleaser

Sylvester Stallone’s “Rocky Balboa” scored big box-office numbers Wednesday for MGM as it played to an estimated $6.2 million on its opening day.

The movie is playing in 2,752 playdates, and will expand Friday to 3,017.

MGM is distribbing domestically. Sony has int’l rights on the pic, which was made via Revolution Studios.

Budgeted at $24 million, “Rocky Balboa” follows Stallone as the Italian Stallion who returns to the squared-circle after a 16-year hiatus for yet another comeback.

The Last “Rocky” picture, 1990’s “Rocky V,” grossed $14 million over its November opening frame for United Artists. It was the weakest performer in the franchise.
