Four college friends reconnect in surprising ways that will forever change their lives in Ed Burns’s “Purple Violtes,” which will be released on DVD by Genius Products and The Weinstein Company.
Infidelity, first loves and second chances are complexly intertwined in this mildly engaging comedy, set in Gotham. A one-time promising writer saddled with a cheating husband, a successful crime novelist who lacks significant literary distinction, a tough-talking schoolteacher still smarting from a decade-old break-up, and a smooth-talking lawyer determined to win back the one that got away, all seek to regain control of their lives.
Set in lower Manhattan, the story centers on Patti Peterson (Messing), a promising writer whose marriage and conventional job keep her from her dream. Her first love Brian Cahill is a successful crime novelist but longs to write works of greater literary value. Murphy, Brian’s lawyer and best friend, still carries a flame for his former girlfriend Kate, even though their relationship ended badly years ago. When Patti sells Murphy a new apartment, and Brian publishes his personal novel, these old friends reconnect in unexpected ways with surprising results.
Written, directed and starring Edward Burns (“27 Dresses,” The Groomsmen”), “Purple Violets” features an all-star cast including Emmy award winner Debra Messing (“The Starter Wife,” “Will & Grace”), Golden Globe nominee Patrick Wilson (“Running With Scissors,” “Little Children”) and Selma Blair (“Feast of Love,” “Hellboy II: The Golden Army”), with strong performances from its supporting cast including Elizabeth Reaser (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Dennis Farina (“Law & Order”) and Donal Logue (“Grounded For Life”).
Winner of Best Narrative Feature at the 2007 Savannah Film and Video Festival.
