‘Dick Johnson Is Dead’

The nominees for outstanding producer of documentary motion pictures are, in alphabetical order, David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet, Dick Johnson Is Dead, My Octopus Teacher, Softie, A Thousand Cuts, Time and The Truffle Hunters.

It’s still being determined which individual producers are eligible for the nomination and award.

Dick Johnson Is Dead has been nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for best documentary and won two IDA documentary awards and three Critics Choice documentary awards.

The David Attenborough film won a Critics Choice documentary award.

My Octopus Teacher won an IDA award and two Critics Choice doc awards.

A Thousand Cuts and Time both won the Gotham Award for best documentary, in a tie.

Time also won an IDA award and Critics Choice doc award and was selected by the National Society of Film Critics as the best non-fiction film of 2020.

The 2020 winners for best documentary producer were Todd Douglas Miller and Thomas Petersen for Apollo 11, which was not for the best documentary Oscar.

Previous PGA doc winners include O.J.: Made in America, Amy and Searching for Sugar Man.

Nominees in the categories of sports, children’s and short-form TV programs will be announced on Friday, Feb. 26, with nominees for theatrical motion pictures (including animated films), TV series and specials, and TV/streamed films announced on Monday, March 8.

The 32nd annual Producers Guild of America awards show will take place virtually on Wednesday, March 24.
