Matthew Heineman, who has directed City of Ghost, continues his explorations of political conflicts in A Private War, a film about the real-life war correspondent Marie Colvin, the Sunday Times reporter.
It’s not the first film about this indefatigable heroine. She has already been fictionalized in Girls of the Sun, a disappointing film that played at the 2018 Cannes Film Fest.
Rosamund Pike, a gifted versatile actress, still best known for the trashy thriller, Gone Girl, renders a compellingly realistic performance as the dedicated journalist Colvin, though her role–and the whole film–is so raw and relentlessly grim that it’s doubtful mainstream audiences will flock to see it.
