Outsiders, The: Tony Award Impact on Box-Office

‘The Outsiders’ Keeps Climbing at Box-Office

‘Chicago’ saw its grosses rise as Vanderpump Rules’ star Ariana Madix returned to star in the musical.

The show, which won the Tony Award for best musical, grossed $1.49 million last week. That’s about $27,000 more than prior week, even though only one more person attended. The average ticket price rose to $177 from $174.

The show was one of the few to earn more money at the box office compared to the prior week. Chicago saw its grosses rise $183,066 from the prior week, to $820,608, as Vanderpump Rules’ star Ariana Madix returned to star in the musical on Aug. 1.

The typical top three, The Lion King ($2.38 million), Wicked ($2.19 million) and Hamilton ($1.95 million) led the pack in terms of industry grosses. Alicia Keys’ Hell’s Kitchen continues to bring in high grosses, with $1.6 million for the week, and the fourth highest gross in the industry.

Once Upon A Mattress

The revival of the musical comedy Once Upon A Mattress, starring Sutton Foster, Michael Urie and Ana Gasteyer, joined the fray last week, starting previews at the Hudson Theatre on July 31, after transferring from a run Off-Broadway at City Center. In its first five performances on Broadway, the show brought in $529,882 and played to 100 percent capacity.
