Oscar Actors: Cate Blanchett to Receive Donostia Award at San Sebastian Film Fest

Blanchett: Second Aussie to Receive Donostia Award at San Sebastian Film Festival

Blanchett, following fellow Australian actor Hugh Jackman, will be honored at this year’s Festival, taking place September 20-28.

Two time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett will receive the Donostia Award at the 72nd San Sebastian Fest.

The Australian star, known for her roles in films such as The Aviator, and more recently the Oscar-nominated Tár, will also feature on the official poster for the festival, created by graphic designer José Luis Lanzagorta.

Blanchett has racked up more than 200 acknowledgments and accolades across her long-spanning career, including two Oscae3 from six nominations, and four BAFTAs.

My Oscar Book:

The announcement marks the second time an Australian actor has been given the festival’s highest honorary award after Hugh Jackman in 2013.

In 2018, the Spanish festival revamped its posters to feature figures from contemporary cinema. Isabelle Huppert, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Sigourney Weaver, Juliette Binoche, and Javier Bardem precede Blanchett as the official image this year, based on a portrait by the photographer Gustavo Papaleo.

Blanchett is part of the Cannes Film Festival’s Immersive Competition, the first-ever selection of augmented and virtual reality works to screen at the austere French film fest.

The 8 competition titles and six out-of-competition screenings also include works featuring such talents as Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, Millie Bobby Brown, and Tahar Rahim.

The lineup highlights cutting-edge VR and AR techniques and includes location-based virtual reality, mixed reality experiences, projection mapping, and holographic works.
