Nolan’s Epic: Biggest R-Rated Movie of All Time With $1.35 Billion

“The Odyssey” landed in theaters on July 17, collecting a mighty $123 million in its domestic debut, and has remained a big-screen sensation. Since then, the big-budget adaptation of Homer’s epic poem has generated $516 million domestically and $835 million internationally — a massive tally for any movie, but especially an R-rated sword-and-sandal adventure that’s nearly three hours long. Much of the fanfare for “The Odyssey” has revolved around Imax, which has racked up $354 million in revenue. It’s the fifth release this year and third R-rated movie ever (joining the company of “Joker”) to surpass $1 billion in revenue.
Among its other box office milestones, “The Odyssey” ranks as Nolan’s biggest movie of all time, surpassing 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises” ($1.08 billion, not adjusted for inflation).
It’s Imax’s highest-grossing release of all time, outpacing 2009’s “Avatar” ($271 million, not adjusted for inflation).
