Movie Beginnings: “Touch of Evil,” Directed by Welles

The opening shot of Orson Welles‘ 1958 Touch of Evil is one of the supreme achievements in film history.

The camera begins on a close-up of a ticking bomb and then pulls back to present the bomb’s journey to detonation via an impressive array of camera positions.

However, Welles was prouder of another elaborate shot later in the film, in which the camera traveled back and forth between motel rooms to reveal several plot points and pieces of information without a break.
