Mohammad, Messenger of God (1977): Anthony Quinn in Failed Epic

In Mohammad, Messenger of God, a would be historical epic, directed by Moustapha Akkad, Anthony Quinn plays Hamza, the uncle of the prophet Mohammad.

To avoid pitfalls and objections from various religious groups, the film doesn’t  show Mohammad at all.

Even so, the production stirred controversy within the Muslim community and was a big commercial failure.

The film reteams Quinn with Irene Papas, who has appeared together in the 1964 Zorba the Greek.

Production values are good, especially cinematography by expert lenser Jack Hildyard.
