In Claude Chabrol’s modernist version of Flaubert’s novel, Isabelle Huppert plays the doomed heroine.
Chabrol is more faithful to the seminal novel than Minnelli was in 1949, but his approach is too cold and detached to turn the viewing into an enjoyable experience.
Also, the otherwise great actress Huppert may be miscast.
