Lucky You: Artistic and Commercial Flop

If Curtis Hanson’s mature vegas romantic drama “Lucky You” is an example of the type of counterprogramming to blockbusters this summer like “Spidey 3”, it’s pretty gloomy. Yet no definitive conclusions can be drawn since “Lukcy You” received mostly negative reviews.

Warner’s “Lucky You,” the frame’s only other new wide opener, opened in sixth place with $2.5 million. Picture, starring Drew Barrymore and Eric Bana, opened in 2,525 theaters for a limp per-location average of just $996.

“Spider-Man 3” dominated the landscape, though Paramount and DreamWorks’ teen thriller “Disturbia” continued to play well, landing in second place to raise its cume to just under $60 million in four weekends of release. Pic held the top spot at the domestic B.O. for three straight weekends before Spidey arrived.

New Line’s legal thriller “Fracture” dipped 50% in its third frame. Pic has taken in $26.4 million to date.
