Zeitgeist Films in association with Kino Lorber presents the theatrical release of Love, Cecil, Lisa Immordino Vreeland’s documentary about the late British Oscar-winning designer.
Winner of the Audience Award at the Hamptons Film Festival, the film premiered at the 2017 Telluride Fest and later screened at other festivals, including DOC NYC and Palm Springs.
Love, Cecil will open at the Elinor Bunin/Film Society of Lincoln Center in NY June 29, and at the Nuart in LA July 20th, with other cities to follow.
The multi-talented Cecil Beaton, the highly acclaimed set and costume designer, photographer, writer, and painter, was a dazzling chronicler and arbiter of taste of his times.
Beaton was probably best known for his production design for Oscar-winning films Gigi and My Fair Lady (especially the white and black Edwardian costumes for the unforgettable Ascot race) but his talents went beyond that.
Using previously unseen footage and stills, and with excerpts from his diaries, wittily narrated by Rupert Everett, the docu depicts Beaton as an artist, including his sources of inspiration, collaborations, fears and anxieties.
His long, fascinating career—truly an international journey–went from the Bright Young Things to the front lines of war to the world of belle monde and the pages of Vogue. His personal life was also colorful, including a relationship with the Royal Family, and his alleged affair with screen legend Garbo. Garbo’s photo was discovered in his bedroom alongside those of his male lovers, though the actress had never talked about it or even acknowledged it.
Love, Cecil examines Beaton’s singular visual sensibility and elegant style, which set high standards of creativity that continue to inspire today movie designers all over the world.
