The 45th Dance on Camera Festival presents a screening of the Brazilian ballet documentary Looking at the Stars, directed by Alexandre Peralta, on Friday, February 3, 2017 at the Walter Reade Theatre in New York City.
Following the teachers, staff and students at the Fernanda Bianchini Ballet Association for the Blind in São Paulo, the sole ballet school in the world for the visually impaired, Looking at the Stars brings audiences close to the preparations for one of the company’s most important performances while focusing on two young dancers in the company: Geyza and Thalia.
Geyza lost her vision at the age of nine but continues to pursue her dream to become a ballerina. Thalia, her teenage protegée, has multiple aspirations and a feisty personality. For each, ballet is an important creative outlet and a means of becoming a more powerful self. Watching them confront their daily challenges proves to be a deeply emotional experience.
Following the screening will be a special Q&A with the school’s founder Fernanda Bianchini, prima ballerina Geyza Pereira, producer and cinematographer Alejandro Ernesto Martinez, and director Alexandre Peralta.
Tickets are available via the Film Society at Lincoln Center box office and online at http://www.filmlinc.org.
