John Wayne: Roles Missed, Rejected–Dirty Dozen

In 1966, John Wayne accepted the role of Major Reisman in The Dirty Dozen, to be directed by Robert Aldrich.

As usual, he asked the director and the execs of the studio, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, for some script changes.

However, eventually, the Duke withdrew from the project in order to make the pro-Vietnam war film, The Green Berets.

He was replaced by Lee Marvin, who did a terrific job in the picture, which became a blockbuster and years later a cult phenom.
