Right on the heels of Call Jane, Phyllis Nagy’s fictionalized drama The Janes is the second film at this year’s Sundance fest dedicated to the female-staffed, Chicago-based underground service.

It provided over 11,000 illegal abortions to women between 1968 and 1973, at which point Roe v. Wade rendered their work obsolete.

Tia Lessin and Emma Pildes’ documentary is more straight-and-sober account of the Janes’ work and legacy, sticking to the facts.
