This trashy potboiler, based on the best-selling novel by Jacqueline Susann (who put her name in the picture’s title), is adapted to the screen by Julius Epstein (Casablanca) and directed by Guy Green (who comes from cinematography).
Deborah Raffin plays January, a college student living with her father, Mike Wayne (Kirk Douglas), a vet, over the hill producer
Working hard to keep the good life for his daughter, Mike marries Deidre Granger (Alexis Smith), a wealthy bisexual who is involved with Karla (Melina Mercouri).
January is courted by the playboy David Milford (George Hamilton), but she’s more attracted to Tom Colt (David Janssen), a middle-aged boozy and brawling novelist, who reminds her of her dad, suggesting intimations of incest.
Brenda Vaccaro, Michael Douglas’ girlfriend at the time, received an Oscar nomination for her supporting performance as the editor of a fashion magazine.
