Inside (2023)
Willem Dafoe Is Nemo
Only a few movies relying on a single actor to carry the entire story have succeeded in captivating audiences for two hours or so.
It’s a major challenge for the writer, director or actor-actress cast in the central role.
Films like Cast Away and 127 Hours showcase the power of such a focused and intimate approach, allowing the actor to deliver their best and often most complex performances.
Willem Dafoe plays an art thief in this dramatic thriller where a job goes awry.
As a result, he finds himself trapped for weeks on end in an expensive Manhattan penthouse filled with priceless works of art.
Dafoe delivers an outstanding performance as a man slowly losing his grip on reality as he endures isolation and mental and physical anguish thanks to his failed escape attempts which only injure him further.
Nemo reveals some of his early childhood and creates increasingly elaborate methods to try and escape, but ultimately, his story concludes in the penthouse accompanied by introspective messages to the owner.
