Donovan Marsh‘s action thriller Hunter Killer, starring Gerald Butler, is one of 2018’s weakest films.
Arne L. Schmidt and Jamie Moss’ screenplay is based upon the novel Firing Point, written by George Wallace and Don Keith.
Silly to a fault, Hunter Killer is neither good on land or sea, dissatisfying as actioner and suspense thriller.
Gerald Butler, who is also a producer, plays Captain Joe Glass of an American submarine on the hunt for a U.S. sub in distress deep under the Arctic Ocean. Things get worse, when he discovers a secret Russian coup is in the offing, threatening to dismantle the whole world.
With crew and country on the line, Captain Glass must assemble an elite group of Navy SEALs to rescue the kidnapped Russian president and sneak through enemy waters to stop WWIII.
Entire cast of good actors is wasted on this contrived and formulaic picture: Gary Oldman, Best Actor Oscar Winner (Darkest Hour), Common (John Wick: Chapter 2), Linda Cardellini (Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Toby Stephens (Die Another Day).
The Summit production was released on October 26, 2018.
