Hill, The (1965): Prison Drama, Starring Sean Connery, Ian Bannen, Michael Redgrave

MGM and Seven Arts

Powerful drama of military prison camp, with fine performances by Sean Connery, Harry Andrews, Ian Bannen, Ossie Davis, Michael Redgrave, Alfred Lynch, and Roy Kinnear.

The acting is superlative, particularly by Connery, who was then at the height of his popularity as James Bond.

The film was lauded by critics for its uncompromisingly stark treatment of brutality and sadism within a British military prison in North Africa during WWII.

What you see on screen is strong characterization, scripted by Ray Rigby, made even stronger by the realistic black-and-white cinematography.

In or to accentuate a more authentic dramatic effect, there is no musical score.

Running time: 122 Minutes.
