Hacksaw Ridge is Mel Gibson’s first film as director in a decade, since his highly acclaimed Apocalypto in 2006.
Eagerly awaited, it will be released by Lionsgate on November 4, 2016.
This Australian-American biopic war film is based on the true story of US Army medic Desmond T. Doss (played Andrew Garfield), a Seventh-day Adventist conscientious objector who famously refused to bear any arms–even in combat. He was subsequently awarded the Medal of Honor by U.S. President Harry S. Truman for single-handedly saving the lives of over 75 fellows while under enemy fire during the brutal Battle of Okinawa in World War II.
Vince Vaughn plays Sgt. Howell, a non-commissioned officer from Alabama appointed to make sure the soldiers are ready for combat.
Hugo Weaving plays Tom Doss, father of Desmond T. Doss, and Ryan Corr is cast in the role of Lt. Manville.
Gregory Crosby originally wrote the story, then Robert Schenkkan penned the script, while Randall Wallace was attached to direct. The final shooting screenplay is credited to Schenkkan and Andrew Knight.
Principal photography began on September 5, 2015 in New South Wales.
