Nearly two decades after it opened, the magic still lives on at the box office.

Over the August 14-16 weekend, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone — the first title in the blockbuster franchise of 2001 — magically flew by the $1 billion mark at the global box office after being rereleased in China and other international markets.

The milestone was announced by Warner Bros. president of international distribution Andrew Cripps.

The Sorcerer’s Stone becomes the second Harry Potter pic to join the billion-dollar club behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 ($1.34 billion), unadjusted. Overall, the franchise has collected earned $7.74 billion in box office receipts.

The 4K 3D restoration of Sorcerer’s Stone opened on Aug. 14 in China, where it topped the weekend chart with more than $13.5 million.
